  • Mind your own business

    It is reported that ʿAbdullāh b. Mas’ūd – Allāh be pleased with him – said, “One of the worst sins is when a man says to his brother, “Fear Allāh,’ and he replies, “Worry about yourself.”

  • Sleep Fire Alarm

    It is reported that Bashr b. Al-Hārith said, “I was once with Al-Fuḍayl b. ʿAyyāḍ in Makkah. He sat with us until midnight, then went and did ṭawāf until the morning. I said, ‘Abū ‘Alī! Won’t you sleep?’ He replied, ‘Woe to you! And is there anyone who hears a mention of the Fire and then feels like sleeping!?’”

  • Wasted Devotion

    It is reported that a group of heretics (People of Bid’ah) and their devout worship was mentioned to ʿAbd Al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī. He said, “Allāh only accepts what conforms to what has been commanded and what is in the Sunnah.” Then he recited, And a monasticism which they (Christians) innovated, We did not ordain it upon them [Al-Ḥadīd: 27]. He went on to say, “So Allāh did not accept this from them and reprimanded them for it.” He then said, “Stick to the way and the Sunnah.”

  • The Softest Hearts

    It is reported that Makḥūl – Allāh have mercy on him – said, “The people with the softest hearts are those who sin the least.”

    It is reported that ‘Awn b. ʿAbdillāh, the ascetic and jurist, said, “Sit with the repentant, for they have the softest hearts.”

  • Going out to Spread Greetings

    Al-Ṭufayl b. Ubay b. Ka’b narrated that he used to come to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar and go with him to the market. He said, “Whenever we went to the market, ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar would never pass a cheap goods merchant, a seller, a poor person or anyone else except that he would greet them with salāms.” He continued, “So I came to him one day and he asked me to go to the market with him. I said, ‘And what are you going to do at the market? You never stop to buy anything, you never ask about goods, you never price anything and you never sit in the market gatherings. Sit with us here and we can talk. So he said to me, ‘O Abū Baṭn (i.e. possessor of the belly; Al-Ṭufayl had a big belly)! We only go out for salāms, to greet those we meet.’’”

  • Rejected Sunnah vs Beautified Opinion

    It is reported that Al-Awzāʿī said:

    Follow the narrations [ways] of those who have preceded (the Salaf) even if people reject you; and beware of people’s opinions, even if they beautify them for you.

  • The Madhab of Imam Malik

    Ma’an b. ‘Īsā reports that Imām Mālik said, “I am but a man. I make mistakes sometimes and I am correct sometimes, so examine my opinions and accept anything that agrees with the Book and Sunnah; and leave anything that does not agree with the Book and Sunnah.”

  • Styles of Charity: Aishah and Asma

    ʿAbdullāh b. Al-Zubayr said, “I have never seen two women more generous than ‘Ā`ishah and Asmā`. They had different ways of being generous. As for ‘Ā`ishah, she used to gather things, until she had a collection, then she would distribute it. As for Asmā`, she would never keep anything until the next day.”

    It is reported that Imām Mālik said:

    I heard Rabīʿah b. ʿAbd Al-Raḥmān say, “The people under the care of their scholars are like children in the laps of their fathers.”

  • Relying on some deeds, forgetting others

    It is reported that Abū Ayyūb Al-Anṣārī – Allāh be pleased with him – said, “A person might do a single good deed, rely on it and forget sins that he regards insignificant, but then meet Allāh (on the Day of Judgment) with those sins surrounding him. And a man might commit a sin, but never stop fearing its consequences, until he meets Allāh safe and sound.”

    Al-Ḥāfidh Ibn Ḥajr, Fatḥ Al-Bārī, references this narration to Asad b. Mūsā’s Al-Zuhd. A slightly different wording is reported by Ibn Al-Mubārak in Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqā`iq Vol.1 p170.
