The Best of then and Now

It is reported that Mujâhid – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Those who strive and exert themselves (al-mujtahid) amongst you today are like those who used to play around amongst those before you.

    Wa alaykumus-salam,
It means the further back you go amongst the generations of Muslim, the more pious the people generally were. So relatively speaking, a person who exerted himself in righteous deeds amongst the generation following the Companions would only be like those of the Companions who strove less than the others – relatively speaking.
This statement is a recognition of the superiority of the Companions – Mujahid was one of the Tabi'un or students of the Companions. And it is an encouragment for his generation to strive and worship Allah even more, although there were great pious individuals in this generation.
